A question that comes up frequently in art education circles is the value of critical theory and writing within a studio based program. Given that the founding pedagogy gives significant consideration to the social, political and cultural context of art production and reception, let the administration know the role that Visual Culture & Process Papers played in your education.
Was it productive for you to have a research and writing component to your studio? Does it effect the way you make art? Since a significant majority of MFA programs do not require critical writing, how would you feel about your MFA degree if this element of the program was dropped in the future?
